A population dispossessed of access to Jerusalem had recourse to two options: reconquest, or recreation. Each approach relied heavily on artistic and symbolic language, but the underlying ideology created two very different artistic traditions. The art of conquest is a call-to-arms, demanding specific action but idealizing the city in broad strokes. This spans history from images of crusader conquest to the “virtual museum” of modern Israel that reconstructs a mythical “Jewish” Jerusalem in digital form. Recreation, however, attempts to preserve and restore the complicated reality of the city in its absence. This second approach is what I have attempted in a digital form.
